Featured show: Herald, through Aug. 1
Herald: the word brings to mind a valiant messenger, a portentous sign of something on the horizon, a threshold on the verge of being crossed. Through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, artists Jennifer Carvalho, Em Kettner, and Simon Petepiece consider the herald within religious iconography, appearing throughout history and architecture, as source material that is “simultaneously generative and ideologically loaded.” Viewers can consider for themselves what meanings such images carry today.
Featured Show: A Survey Exhibition of Gallery Artists, through Aug. 8
Galleri Urbane takes advantage of summer’s spacious spirit by turning over their entire exhibition capacity to celebrate their gallery artists. The program is curated with selections of new work and new artists, plus works from the archives ripe for rediscovery. “A Survey Exhibition of Gallery Artists is specifically designed to serve as a resource and inspiration hub for consultants, interior designers, and private collectors,” say gallery staff, who welcome requests for private viewings — the ultimate personal experience with a cross-section of art.

Featured show: From Sea to Shining Sea: Celebrating Photographs of the Vast Arena that is America, through Aug. 15
Invented in 1826, photography introduced the world to a new kind of magic, and American artists have not shied away from its potential to reveal new ways of seeing and considering lived experience. This summer PDNB Gallery presents From Sea to Shining Sea, a photography exhibition that recognizes the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by illustrating the United States’ culture and landscape through works by artists in their stable and archives, from farmland to cityscapes to portraits to protests. Be sure to make note of the gallery’s new Denton address before you go.

Featured show: Summer Group Exhibition of Gallery Artists, July 4–Aug. 15
For many friends and families, summer is a time for gatherings, celebrations, and, if we’re lucky, a little rejuvenation. It’s no different for Texas galleries and their numerous chosen families of artists. During this year’s sunny season, Moody Gallery presents an exhibition of works by gallery artists including Stephen Greene, Helen Altman, James Drake, Melissa Miller, Al Souza, Pat Colville, Michael Kennaugh, Liz Ward, Jay Shinn, Dornith Doherty, Dan Sutherland, Page Kempner, Michael Bise, and Claire Ankenman, to name a few. The exhibition is poised to help you soak up the good vibes of summer with art that reverberates with the spirit of the Lone Star State.
Featured show: Play ▶, through July 25
Artists Venessa Monokian and JR Roykovich know that when the day-to-day grind of the world gets to be too much, play becomes a thing of necessity. For their gallery-wide collaborative exhibition Play ▶ at Throughline Collective, the two create an incubator of sorts to “explore the physical and virtual building blocks of creation.” Living organisms, harvested light, and foundations of visual language give way to an evolving, shifting presentation that invites gallery visitors to grow, expand, and respond in turn.

Featured show: Another Hit, through Sept. 30
The group exhibition Another Hit, hosted by FL!GHT Gallery and Blue Star Arts Complex, features works by 48 artists from across the country, Seattle to California to Houston to and cities in between. “Art is a powerful force at every moment in history, and in especially difficult moments it is even more vital,” proclaim the exhibition materials, and the message feels especially poignant today. The artists whose works are on view encourage the opposition of dehumanizing, oppressive systems, while championing creativity, humor, and beauty as increasingly urgent alternatives.
